Regarding the Meningococcal Outbreak in South East England

Posted on March 19th, 2026

Between 13 and 17 March 2026, UKHSA identified 20 cases of invasive meningococcal disease in the South East. Six cases have been confirmed as Neisseria meningitidis group B. Most cases are students from the University of Kent, Canterbury, and sixth form students from local secondary schools. At least 10 cases attended Club Chemistry in Canterbury on 5th, 6th or 7th March 2026. The illness has been severe with rapid deterioration, and two deaths have occurred.

There are two routine types of Meningitis Vaccine:

  • The Meningitis B Vaccine is routinely given in the childhood immunisation schedule before the age of two but cannot be administered after this age.
  • The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered to those aged 13 and 14 in school year 9 and young people remain eligible until aged 25. Anyone who has missed their MenACWY vaccination should catch up as soon as possible through their school immunisation team or their GP practice. Particularly before attending a new college or university.

If you aren’t sure if you’ve had your MenACWY vaccine, please call Kernow Health on 01392 342678 before booking in with your GP.
