Ear Wax Removal – What You Need to Know

To help you choose the safest and most effective option, we follow NICE guidance (NG98), which recommends microsuction as the best way to remove ear wax. Microsuction is gentle, doesn’t use water, and lets the clinician see exactly what they’re doing. If you’d like this option, you’ll need to arrange it privately. There are many providers available locally, but we’re not able to recommend any specific clinics.

If you’d prefer to use our NHS service, we can offer ear syringing at our Extended Access Hub at weekends. Syringing can work well, but it does come with some risks, such as temporary discomfort, irritation, infection, or—very rarely—damage to the eardrum. Because of this, NICE advises that syringing should only be used when other methods aren’t suitable.

To keep things safe, syringing needs two appointments:

• First appointment: A quick ear check to make sure syringing is right for you
• Second appointment: The syringing itself
